City fees to blame for housing affordability? Don’t be silly says mayor

The mayor of Richmond has hit back at claims municipalities’ fees are making housing unaffordable. Malcolm Brodie was responding to a speech from the throne earlier in the week read by the BC provincial government’s Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon which criticized city fees and promised that the government would work with municipalities to reduce “hidden costs” in home purchases. Mayor Brodie told the CBC that "The costs being assessed by the city are absolutely clear and to suggest there's a transparency problem is simply a silly suggestion." He said that although the province has been supportive of housing affordability challenges he would like to see more from them.
