Consumer sentiment slipping

The weekly Canadian Consumer Sentiment Index has slipped slightly for the week ending Dec. 18 2015. The barometer of optimism from Bloomberg and Nanos Research dipped from 55.32 to 55.03 and is some way below the year’s high of 58.62 seen in mid-November. The two sub-indexes - on personal finances and job security; and the overall economy and real estate prices – were also lower. “Of note, perceptions related to job security and the future strength of the Canadian economy realized negative pressure this week,” said Nanos Research Group Chairman Nik Nanos. Younger, lower paid Canadians were generally more optimistic than other groups. Provincially, only Ontario gained in sentiment. Positivity declined among renters and homeowners.
