First Nations granted new powers on Ontario land

Indigenous businesses should find a reduction in the red tape involved in developing land for commercial purposes following a landmark decision on rule changes. The Globe and mail reports that the band will have greater powers over its land at Parry Sound Ontario, more like a municipality, following a referendum among the Shawanga First Nation. The vote means that the band are no longer bound by certain parts of the Indian Act and will not have to seek permission from Indigenous Affairs in Ottawa. The band’s land code was first proposed in 2009 and has taken until now to be approved.
