Ontario leads drop in consumer confidence

Consumer confidence is slipping further and spreading to more areas according to the latest Canadian Confidence Index from Bloomberg and Nanos Research. The survey for the week ending Jan 15 showed a drop to 53.01 from 53.78 a week earlier and continuing to fall from the 12-month high of 58.62. Although confidence in the Prairies is still the lowest in Canada, at 45.06, it increased slightly last week. Meanwhile Ontario saw the largest drop in sentiment, falling almost 2 points to 53.60. BC confidence is the highest in Canada at 59.98 followed by Quebec on 54.89.

Individual poll results show that positive responses on the overall economy, personal finances including mortgages, and real estate were all lower last week while expectations for job security increased slightly.
