Residential permits up for third straight month

Residential building permits were up again in October, the third consecutive month of gains.

Statistics Canada reported a rise of 7.7 per cent to $2.8 billion worth of permits for single-family homes with Alberta and Ontario leading the rise; and a 7.7 per cent rise for multi-family homes to $2.3 billion.

Permits were issued for 19,116 new dwellings, a rise of 7.9 per cent compared to September. Single-family units rose 11.8 per cent to 6,819 while multi-family units gained 5.9 per cent to 12,297.

Non-residential permits were also higher at $1.6 billion, up 29.3 per cent compared to September.
