UN says Canada’s housing policies are failing

A report from the United Nations says that Canada is not fulfilling its obligations on housing. Criticism includes the lack of a national housing strategy, insufficient funding for housing and a lack of social housing units.

The report follows the rejection by Canada’s Supreme Court of a case from housing advocates who wanted a judicial review of housing policy. Canada is legally required to provide an adequate standard of living as a signatory to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

With the private housing sector in many markets continuing to see low supply and higher prices, advocates warn that the housing crisis will get worse as fewer Canadians are able to enter the market and struggle with increasing rents.
