Building permits in January up for residential, down for non-residential

Residential building permits for single-family dwellings increased for a third straight month, up 12.2% from December to $2.3 billion in January. Construction intentions were up in eight provinces, led by Quebec.

Non-residential building permits declined for a third straight month in January, reaching their lowest level since February 2009.

The non-residential decreases were seen in six provinces, with Quebec recording the largest decrease.

Multi-family residential permits were also down in January, dropping 2.3% from the month before.
