Farmland investment plants itself in the mainstream

Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Canada (BHGREC) has now launched a new publication catering to rural investments as interest in farmland reaches skyward.

Farm & Ranch is also linked to a website, farmandranch.ca, which provides prospective buyers with a search function enabling them to find properties all over the country.

The interest in farmland spans several months. CREW Online originally reported on that interest in September, citing a report on the capital gains even short-term investors are now earning. Farmland outside of Western Canada has, for example, seen 50 per cent year-over-year growth since 2011.

Feeding that growth is urban sprawl and residential development. The trend has deepened investor interest, with some investors just as eager to purchase land for new housing developments as they are for farming purposes. This has resulted in many bidding wars among several interested parties.

Farmers are still more than willing to shell out dough for land, especially with crop prices on an upward trajectory – in particular, the price for barley and corn.
