HGTV co-host sues Toronto police for libel over arrest

The police charges were based on accusations that Anthony Sayers’ work on a woman’s Toronto home in February was substandard, but the Crown concluded there was no reasonable prospect of a conviction.

Sayers co-hosts The Unsellables on HGTV. He told the Toronto Star his reputation had been harmed by the charges. “A lot of sleepless nights. I was depressed for a while and wondering where my life was going,” Sayers said.

A March 14 release from police said they “believe there may be more victims.” No further charges were ever made, however. Sayers’ notice to sue alleges police also threatened a news release if he did not co-operate, but when he did, he was still arrested.
