The DuProprio-commissioned survey, conducted by Ad Hoc Research, asked users of the site whether they had been contacted by real estate agents, and what those agents had told them.
According to the results, 90% of consumers using DuProprio were contacted by an average of eight agents, which they described as a “source of annoyance.”
In Montreal more than half of homeowners who were contacted by agents considered this solicitation as high pressure and 57% of respondents stated that their choice to sell with DuProprio was blatantly disparaged. In the same city, 74% of clients contacted by agents found the approach used to be unacceptable, high pressure, disrespectful or disparaging.
CREA spokesman Pierre Leduc says realty is a competitive field and Realtor’s contacting potential clients found through sale-by-owner services is “completely legitimate prospecting.”
“A seller advertising their property is for sale and providing contact information is expecting calls from interested parties,” Leduc told CREW Friday, “and Realtors will use for-sale-by-owner sites and signage to find opportunities to offer sellers their expertise and experience.”
The province of Quebec has roughly 15,000 Realtors, with 10,000 working in the greater Montreal area. Sales figures at the end of April 2012 (year-to-date) reveal that Realtors have sold over 17,000 homes in and around Montreal, and over 31,000 homes across the province.
Real estate agents view assert those numbers speak to the effectiveness of their services and the value represented by their commissions.
Survey data for the DuProprio report was collected using an online survey given to a sample selected randomly from 1,009 DuProprio clients from across Quebec.
