Amazon signs lease in highly anticipated Vancouver office tower

Amazon has signed a short-term expandable lease for one of the most highly anticipated office towers in Vancouver.

Bloomberg reports that the firm will occupy about 119,000 square feet at 400 West Georgia, a 24-storey tower owned by Westbank and Allied Properties REIT.

Other tenants include Deloitte and Apple and Amazon will lease its space through co-working space operator IWG.

The short-term deal will give Amazon a home for an increasing headcount while its nearby is being developed.

The firm has also agreed leases in a tower at Dunsmuir Street and already has space in the Telus Garden building.

Amazon intends to increase its headcount in Vancouver to 5,000 by 2022, a plan it unveiled in 2018. At the time its Vice President for Canada and Mexico, Alexandre Gagnon, explained why the city was such a big part of its expansion plans.

“Vancouver is home to an incredibly talented and diverse workforce, and these thousands of new employees will invent on behalf of our customers worldwide,” he said.
