Mortgage lender, CMHC consider teardown of trauma house

A home in Newfoundland where a 5-year-old girl died could be torn down if neighbours get their way.

The Carbonear house was the scene of a fire which resulted in the tragic death of the girl while she was staying with her father who is facing first-degree murder and arson charges, reports.

Neighbours say the charred property is a constant reminder of the horrific incident and are calling for it to be demolished. It’s understood that mortgage payments have been missed and it’s unclear who is now responsible for the home.

CMHC told the Canadian Press that it is in contact with CIBC, the mortgage lender for the property, and says it has offered its assistance in resolving the matter. The agency says that the lender has not made a claim on the property.
