More affordable housing coming to Alberta

Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jonathan Denis made the announcement in Calgary, citing a need to help seniors, recent immigrants, and the homeless find affordable housing.

The Housing Capital initiatives program will cost $188 million and include 27 projects in 13 communities. It partners municipalities, non-profit groups and the private sector.

The Edmonton Journal over the weekend revealed it learned the “vast majority” of that city’s eight subsidized housing projects would be built outside the inner-city neighborhoods. The paper said there had been prior concern by residents in the inner-city that their neighborhoods were “turning into ghettos” due to high concentrations of homeless and low-income residents.
