And just when you think all the negative media attention on the condo market is easing, along comes a new documentary showcasing all the ‘bad’ in the sector. The Condo Game, premiering on CBC’s Doc Zone on Thursday, November 21, is promoted as a “revealing look through the glittering glass at the forces driving Canada’s booming condo industry – and the consequences for our communities.”
From pricing structure to legal aspects, the documentary holds no punches when analyzing the condo market. “The Condo Game looks at the lessons learned from Vancouver’s leaky condo crisis and explores how Toronto could benefit from tougher regulations. Warning bells will be ringing loud and clear for condo owners and communities across Canada,” says the show’s press release.
With condo developments popping up almost overnight and panes of glass from buildings raining down on unsuspecting pedestrians, the show naturally features the quality of new builds and interviews a number of buyers who have encountered various problems with their units.
The documentary may raise a few issues but will it have an impact on sales?
“It’s a hard one to call,” Michael Sjerven, mortgage expert with Vivid Mortgage in Vancouver. “ This may scare some buyers off certain developments or they may wait a while and do a lot more due diligence before they sign.”
