Windsor homeowners face surprise doubling of property tax

Many homeowners in Windsor will face a larger property tax than previously believed following this week’s council meeting.

The original 0.9% rate has been increased to 1.7% due to a redistribution of taxes. City councillors voted to reduce the tax on apartment buildings, meaning more tax for other properties.

The move follows pressure from the provincial government to cut taxes for apartment buildings to be in line with other residential taxes.

The Windsor Star reports that there is divided opinion in the city with some believing that apartment building owners should pay higher taxes as they can be written off against tax as business expenses. Others believe all residential properties should be taxed at the same rate.
