Lafarge Canada has lent its technical expertise in choosing the right materials for a landmark condominium development in an underdeveloped region of Oakville that could set the bar for what could become one of the GTA’s most sustainable neighbourhoods.

Fernbrook Homes and Crystal Homes co-developed NUVO Condos, an eight-storey, 487-unit, mid-rise. However, of significance is the expertise Lafarge Canada provided in helping the developers choose the most eco-friendly materials available across the globe through a program called the ECOPact Standard.

The ECOPact Standard is touted for having the largest range of low-carbon concrete the world over, by using concrete mixtures that reduce carbon emissions by up to 90 per cent when compared to conventional concrete. It is also considered a crucial building block to meeting ambitious net-zero targets.

That’s why NUVO upped the ante by using Lafarge’s Weathermix Cold Weather Concrete, which is perfectly suited for Canada’s four seasons by acclimating to temperature through accelerated performance in the dead of winter, and deceleration during hot, humid summers.

NUVO additionally used Chronolia High Early Strength Concrete, a ready-mix concrete renowned for its exceptionally robust, and early, bonding gains.

NUVO is the first of many developments in this rare undeveloped GTA neighbourhood, but its sustainable composition a sort of prototype intended to guide subsequent developments in the neighbourhood how to follow suit.

“This project exemplifies our commitment to sustainability, showcasing how integrating ECOPact can create tangible reductions in CO2 emissions while meeting the high standards of our partners,” said John McCabe, VPMG of Concrete/RMXSpecialist for Lafarge Canada East.

The ECOPact Standard has been a resounding success at NUVO Condos by eliminating approximately 1,750 tons of CO2 emissions.

With the increasingly punitive carbon tax, which rose to $65 per metric ton in April—and which is slated to swell to $170 per metric ton by 2030—the developers conducted meticulous due diligence when selecting a materials provider to help them realize their ambition of building a truly sustainable community, and one that’s future-proofed.

“Working with Lafarge on this project has been a game changer,” said Kathy Di Silvetro, President of Crystal Homes. “Their commitment to sustainability aligns with our vision for responsible construction, and this successful partnership sets a new standard for future projects.”

Lafarge also carefully selects its building partners in an effort to ensure it only works with developers whose commitments to sustainability are reflected in their final products.

Jerry Bettencourt, VAP Specialist Lafarge Canada East, says that isn’t just healthier for the environment, it improves the wellbeing of residents, too.

“The strategic use of ECOPact, and the collaboration among various teams, underscores our dedication to driving sustainable solutions in construction,” he said.
